World 1-3: Foundations of Educational TEchnology (ETEC 511)
In ETEC 511, we looked at what educational technology actually is, and how it can help or hinder us in our teaching practise. We could look at ed tech as tools, but the tools aren’t teaching – we are! Unless we use sound instructional design, the greatest tools would be meaningless.
The inclusion of ed tech into our classrooms supports 21st Century Learning Skills. While there are many different terms, frameworks, or components that seem to be under this name, I like to use Learner, Contributor, Collaborator, Innovator, Thinker. Ed tech helps students do all of these things. Ironically enough, they do these things on the Internet at home anyway! However, it is important to teach our students to do these things in a positive and supportive manner.

One area of interest that I entered into the MET program was over the use of mobile devices in the classroom – specifically smartphones. In my teaching practise, ed tech devices are sometimes hard to get a hold of. I had noticed a large number of phones coming into my classroom – the latest and greatest… and unused for learning purposes. Building upon my desire to see how using social media in the classroom could increase engagement in learning, I sought to discover how smartphones could aid in that process. Through research, I discovered that this generation of learners learn differently than previous generations (including my own).
